So easy a troll can do it!

Published by under community news,Crafting,Editorial, news on Dec. 10. 2011.

Since it is the holidays, and we are coming up on Launch Week, we will all start obsessing about ONE thing…

FOOD!

…What? You thought I was gonna say something else? What are you…gamers????

Well… even gamers need high-quality, easy-to-fix (or just tasty) morsels to fill their bellies between the slaughtering of the evil (or not so evil) in the universe

We are going to start with EASY in this installment.  And, as a reminder, I would love to hear what you cook for gaming.

@MagicJoshrooms shared his Sweet Potatoes with me.

 Get 8 sweet potatoes.

Peel, dice, and boil them just like if you were making mashed potatoes.

When they are fork tender, mash them with brown sugar and cinnamon. (I cannot give you an exact measurement on the brown sugar and cinnamon. My Mom has made these for years and can’t give me a measurement; she just knows how much she needs by looking at it. This will also be the first year Sarah and I make them so I cannot even tell you what we usually use. My recommendation is to start small and add to taste.)

When you are done mashing, place the mixture in an oven-safe container and line the top with marshmallows. Regular or mini marshmallows both work. Use whatever you prefer. (For the record we use regular sized marshmallows.)

Put them in an oven set for 350 until the marshmallows are golden brown and delicious. The sweet potatoes are already cooked at this point, the whole point of this step is to brown the marshmallows.

Enjoy!

@Gamer_lady shared with me this nice warm Turkey Tortilla Pie.

 Turkey Tortilla Pie

Get a round baking dish and cover the bottom with a thin layer of your favorite sauce (I like to use Alfredo sauce, but mild enchilada sauce works too).

Layer a tortilla on top of the sauce (I like to use corn, but flour also works)

Place some pieces of shredded leftover turkey on top of the tortilla and top with some grated cheese and a dollop of sauce (you can also do a mixture of ricotta and shredded cheese for creamier layer)

Keep making layers of tortilla, turkey, cheese and sauce until the pie is about 3 inches deep.

Finish with more shredded cheese if you like.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes until the cheese and sauce are bubbly around the edges. Slice like a pie and serve wedges with your choice of toppings. I like to use a bit of sour crème and some sliced red onion, or some mild salsa.

We have this easy and simple soup from @WeekendJedi.

 Easy soup

Fry onion in a little oil,
add 2/3 diced parsnips,
curry powder to taste,
1 pint veg stock.

Simmer 20 minutes, season, blend until smooth 🙂

And then we have for dessert: Chocolate Pecan Pie from @scurrilouscribe.

  •  3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup Karo® Light OR Dark OR with Real Brown Sugar Corn Syrup
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet OR 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 2 tablespoons butter OR margarine, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Spice Islands® Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1-1/4 cups pecans
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked deep-dish pie crust
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Mix eggs, sugar, corn syrup, chocolate, butter and vanilla in a large bowl using a spoon. Stir in pecans.
  3. Pour into pie crust.
  4. Bake on center rack of oven for 50 to 55 minutes, or until pie appears barely set.
  5. Cool for 2 hours before serving.

Of course if you have more easy, or just tasty recipes you would like to share….

I have a couple ideas for some simple gamer-ready nibbles. I’ll try to think up a little something and send it along! 😀

    REAL Cranberry sauce.

If you want to have some real tasty cranberry sauce that is not shaped like a tin can…

Take one bag of fresh cranberries (12 oz)
1 cup of pulp free orange juice
    1 cup of sugar.
    1 tblsp of cinnamon.

Pour the orange juice into a small pot, and mix the sugar in on low heat. Once the sugar is dissolved, put the cinnamon in, stir, then place the cranberries in, and turn up the heat.

Once the Cranberries start to pop, about 10 mins, let them boil for another 2 minutes, then pour gently into a blender. Pulse the blender 3-4 times, and pour into a bowl, let the sauce cool down to about room temp, then put in the fridge, it will thicken as it cools.

    its delicious.

Hmm. Tim seems to have hit upon the classic gaming food groups. However, I find the sugar crash of said diet to be bad for my reaction times later on. LOL.

    Gaming Noms

    “Dry Rations”
1 Large jar of cheap-o peanuts
1 Large bag of M&M’s – the coating is essential! No chocolate on fingers!
    1 small/med bag of dried pineapples/apples/banana chips

The above is my staple for times when I do not want to “make food”.

Protein-rich (keeps you from feeling starved), plenty of simple unadulterated sucrose (actual sugar – a disaccharide, NOT the same as fructose btw :-p), and the fruits make it a little less boring (plus vitamins, like we care about those…)

FYI – don’t waste money on energy drinks, it’s bad economics. Black coffee is probably 1/100th the cost, is more effective, and won’t give you the outrageous sugar rush/crash that an energy drink will. Yes, they might taste better – but are we concerned with taste? Do you think Darth Vader complains that his helmet is stuffy? No! We are gamers!
